5 The value of a Colonial appointment depends upon so many circumstances besides the salary that the Secretary of State often eaunot judge what would be acceptable to an officer. Applicants for promotion should therefore, in their own interests, stato as precisely as possible what they desire, either specifying certain appointments, or at least mentioning the Colonies to which they would or would not be willing to go and the amount of salary which they think that they may reasonably expect.
